pelagic
I was sad to read of three snow leopards dying of COVID. I remember reading of people killing their cats at the beginning of the pandemic, but with little news about it since I assumed it was an overreaction and perhaps didn't really happen. But it does. Some animals are infected by and die of COVID. We did a pretty piss poor job of containing it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2021/11/14/snow-leopard-death-covid/
Jolly_F
There have been lots of reports from earlier in the year of it making animals sick. It seems cats in particular. https://amp.abc.net.au/article/13152752 https://www.forbes.com/sites/judystone/2021/01/26/covid-killed-a-tiger-are-your-house-cats-at-risk/?sh=2166cea62cb2
pelagic
Those articles are scary. Apparently COVID is heading off into the feral stoat and mink populations where is may brew up into something worse.
Okelydokely
Yikes. I was reminded of this just this morning as I watched the first ep of the new series of tiger king (needed some trash tv) and the PETA person (I think) mentioned how Jeff Lowe wasn’t particularly careful about opening up post covid and that big cats can indeed contract covid. Not that any of the key players in that show truly cares about the welfare of the animals, but ya know, it was a fair point.
Andi
Didn't they cull a whole bunch of minks in Denmark or somewhere last year for this reason?
Lou-bags
7 minutes ago, Andi said: Didn't they cull a whole bunch of minks in Denmark or somewhere last year for this reason? Millions of them. 15 million IIRC. And then they had to exhume the bodies and incinerate them. 1 1
pelagic
Apparently, humans and mink can infect each other.
