Iamferalz
I have seen a lot of discussion in the media about a possible future armed conflict in the Asia Pacific region. This is the latest in today’s news.https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/conflict-with-china-a-high-likelihood-says-top-australian-general-20210503-p57ogv.htmlIs it something we should take seriously on a personal level? Even if Australia is not directly involved it will have implications obviously.
Anne Bonny
We probably should take it seriously. China was always shaping up to be a problem but Trump withdrawing from influence in the South China Sea really sped things up. They gained control of the contested zones and these kind of genies are pretty hard to stuff back in bottles. I hope we don't do any more poking of the bear diplomatically or militarily until Biden does but with our current crop of wingnuts, who knows? 2/3 of Aussies support a war unqualified by anything the US does., it'd be their most popular policy. They could well get us into something on our own, in which case we may as well sign the joint over to them now and save the middle man.. People think our big swinging dick is much bigger than it actually is. We don't look forward at all to the possibility that even if the US initially backs military action now to put a stop to the shennanigans with Taiwan and Hong Kong, the GOP could regain the house next year and cut the purse strings or we could get another Trump who'd pull out and abandon our stupid arse less than 3 years from now.. Mumrocks
We have a Defence Force not an Armed Force. The theory behind that is that we are helpers to allies such as the US and follow them rather than starting something ourselves. We just don’t have enough people or equipment to think we could defeat anyone of any relevant size
