Everything I've read about hunter gatherer (HG) societies suggests that hunting was/is primarily a male activity, particularly of big game. Hunting of small game was/is carried out by both sexes, but still mostly by males. So it's not that women can't or don't hunt, it's just not very common in most HG societies.
