Kallie
So DH just applied for a job in far north Queensland. Obviously we'll need to wait and see if he gets it, but it's now a real possibility that we might move and it's a big move- from Melbourne, with 4 kids and pets. I'm not sure exactly what I'm posting for, I think just to have somewhere to talk it through, I think we'll keep it to ourselves until he gets an interview at least. So many logistics if it actually happens
Jolly_F
How far in far north Qld? The biggest thing is the heat I guess but it’s a nice lifestyle up there, that’s for sure.
Basil
Will his new employer pay for relocation costs?Professional movers will come in, pack and transport all your belongings. You’ll just need somewhere to stay once your stuff is packed and before it is unpacked. Finding a house and schools that suit your kids and family will be a hassle. Will you rent first to try out an area before committing? Do you have the ability to visit first before you put in applications? There are pet transport companies. You could also drive up with them yourselves. Both cause stress in their own way. It’s exciting but the logistics can seem overwhelming if you let it. There are many EBers who have moved and can provide support during this process.
ClaudiaCosette
Wow, that is a big move. I have no advice as we've only moved within the same city (and that was huge for us!) but just wanted to wish you all the best whichever way it turns out. My DH has just been offered a new job (full-time working from home) and it's a big decision even without factoring a move in.
Kallie
Lol I probably should have added that dh is from there and I lived there with him for a couple of years so we know what we're getting, it's a small town inland about an hour from cairns. We're thinking we'll buy if we can, we can rent out our Melbourne place until we're ready to come back, I think we're both on board with 5 years ish then back for eldest to start high school etc. It'll depend a lot on if we can refinance our loan or get a new one, but renting doesn't seem worth it, rent up there is about the same as down here it's crazy. So may as well get another investment if we can, then we can rent or sell it when we go. The travel is going to be painful. Dh suggested he could drive up with the pets which sounded good until i realized that would mean I'd have to take 4 kids on a plane by myself lol, no thanks Edited February 27, 2021 by Kallie
Mumrocks
Could he take the pets and maybe one kid? When we moved states we didn’t want kids at the house with the movers so I took the kids to our accommodation and left DH to deal with the house. Divide and conquer has become our motto! Guest BusbyWilkes
How far in far north Qld? The biggest thing is the heat I guess but it’s a nice lifestyle up there, that’s for sure.Oohh - does the “up there” rather than “up here” mean you’ve made the move? If so, hope you settle in well (especially moving with teenagers!)OP, is it in the tablelands area? Do you have anyone who could fly up with you, even if you had to pay their fare? Or give DH the pets and a kid or two! Great lifestyle up there for young kids. School starting ages differ to Vic, so that would be worth clarifying for your older one (or two). Kallie
Yeah it's in the tablelands, we'd love the weather change and hopefully dh will slow down and get a bit of work life balance back if we do move. I hadn't thought about school ages, dd is 5 turning 6 oct this year so I thought she'd just be in fyos still, so I'll check that. I did think i could possibly take the girls up but i'm not sure i want him to drive all the way by himself. He's the type that wouldn't stop for breaks so I worry about safety. I'd rather go with and take turns driving, good practice for me too. I could take the 2 older kids on the plane and leave with nana (other plus of moving, we'll miss grandma but get to know nana better, and grandma has the financial stability to visit that nana doesn't really). 2nd would be fine left with nana i reckon, but eldest might freak out since it'd be a few days at least. I thought maybe we could fly the cats up and ask nana to pick them up then drive everyone else up. I don't think the dog would handle a plane trip well at her age. I've considered asking mum if she wants 2 cats lol but I don't think she willWe're looking at shipping container movers, so they drop off the container, you fill it up over a week or two, they pick it up and move it and you've got a week or two to unpack it yourself. I thought it might be less stressful with all the kids than trying to pack and unpack in a day and match the movers travel interstate. But if anyone has a better suggestion i'd love to hear it! Guest BusbyWilkes
We have extended family up there - it’s beautiful. With that DOB, your DD would be in prep this year (one of the older kids in the year).
Kallie
Cool that should keep some consistency for her, she's probably the kid I'm most concerned about moving, she's a bit anxious and she's settled in well to school here. But by the same token if we're going to move this is the best time before she's established close friendships to miss or become very attached to the school. And even though I'd rather stay public if she doesn't find the public school as supportive as she needs there is a catholic primary option. Hopefully won't come to that though. The other kids at least are little and more adaptable personalities, the boys will love an adventure lol. Downside is i'm pretty sure there's no dedicated kinder there, just the daycares. I'd been looking forward to decreasing childcare costs when #2 and then #3 started kindy, but we'll have to wait an extra year up there till they start school. Guest BusbyWilkes
The community kinders are “C and K”.Lots of the towns have them. If there’s not one in yours, there may be one close enough to travel to.YungaburraMalandaMareebaRavenshoe Dimbulah

You just take the super special possessions and things you’ll need for the trip and let the removalists take care of the rest. Turn the drive up into a holiday and take it slowly to see the sights. Pets are a hassle but there are motels that accept dogs (I’ve never looked into cats) so it would be a real family trip. It keeps the family together and safer to break up the driving. At your destination, the removalists do all the unpacking and you just direct them. You can get them to just place the large items and you take your time to unpack the smaller stuff where you want. They also take away the boxes and packing materials if they unpack. I’ve always found that an added hassle with moving.
Kiwi Bicycle
I would just be careful of container movers as you may end up with a rental/ house where you cannot drop a container for a length of time ( shared driveways, no grass verge, steep section etc). Just do the whole hog pack and move deal. Most large moving companies also store your stuff if your rental isn't available striaght away ( at a cost of course!). Princess Peach
Your DD would be in year 1 next year then.Community kindy’s are hard to come by in general, but they might not run under the C & K banner. Just look for one that runs school hours in the description (I know there is one in both Kuranda & Dimbula)Besides the weather the only other cultural changes are no Aldi in Cairns & needing to be prepared for cyclones. Kallie
Lol and the hour drive to the closest civilization we were up there during yasi, was certainly an experience! Think we'll need to replace our mattress before the move, if it happens. I do like the range of choices in melb
El Segundo
How exciting, but yes big job organising it all.We moved from Sydney to Melb. I'm from Melb so knew where we'd like to live so that was easy, and I flew down with ds while dp stayed in Sydney a bit longer and painted the apartment before it was rented out. Things that were great:His work paid for removalists and they did all the heavy lifting at each endWe rented a storage unit and started packing up stuff as soon as we could and moving it to storage. Was heaps better for open house for renters but also the movers just went and picked it up from storage unit, really handy. Not so great:Removalists were paid extra to unpack everything but they didn't know where we wanted things and it was too fast to see everything so they just emptied everything into the rooms. So rather than boxes to unpack we had random piles of stuff to sort. Weird.Get financial advice about how to structure loan and taking finance out of Melb property etc. We didn't and it cost us a lot as we couldn't take the equity out of apartment after a certain timeGood luck with it all. Lukes mummi
Start decluttering and selling stuff now! I have a friend who moved to cairns and is trying to sell all her DS winter clothes on gumtree. Not a lot of interest unfortunately. Yes you may need a couple of winter clothes of the 2 weeks of winter, and for holidays south, but not heaps. Lukes mummi
Also, if there’s any state government vouchers available at the moment, make sure you apply and use them before you leave. I’m thinking the sports, creative kids vouchers. I’m not 100% sure what Victoria has, but you will lose them if you move interstate
Etcetera
We've done it twice. First from Sydney to Brisbane so we could buy a house. I had a sibling nearby but we aren't close and apart from that we didn't know anyone. I met a few people from my EB due in groups which really helped enormously. Second from Brisbane to country Victoria to buy land, get away from city and climate etc. We had a lovely friends in Brisbane and I do miss them a little at times but we've now been here just over two years and we have close friends here, and have settled pretty well. We had a very rocky start at first and I would just remind myself that we could always move back, nothing has to be forever.Good luck with it all. Kallie
Thanks everyone, great advice! Im planning to send an email off to our broker soon for some advice if it happens, what our options might be. Knowing where we stand there will make a big difference. We've got so much crap I don't want to move I absolutely need to get a head start on getting rid of it. Bonus is, even if we don't move, it needs to go lol seei win win there. We've just done a hard rubbish but we should have one more to use if we need it
ClaudiaCosette
Second from Brisbane to country Victoria to buy land, get away from city and climate etc. I wondered if we bought your house in Brisbane! That is exactly what the previous owners of our house did - moved to country Victoria for a tree change. But it was over 5 years ago, so probably not you
Kallie
Update: it's happening. I'm freaking out. I have a million things to do lol. Everything needs to move fast so that makes it harder, new job start date is listed as 22 March, but we'll never make that, so dh is going to propose to start in a month. Our broker says it's going to take 25 days approx got us to get pre approval for the loan we need to buy, so we'll need to crash with dh's mum for a bit in the interim which is painful. Dh is insisting on driving the car up because it's cheaper, and for the dog. Yet he wants to outsource all the work around the house because of the time it'll take. I dunno, we'll work it out I guess.

The easiest move we ever did was from Eirope to Sydney, we got removalists who packed and shipped, then stored everything for a few months till we got a house then unpacked. The hardest we did was hiring a van, packing it ourselves and moving 10km up the road.
