Breathing issues

Hi everyone,

So, before I start, I want to say that I have an appointment with a specialist next Tuesday. So, hopefully I will get a professional opinion soon. But I just wanted to know if anyone went through this before.

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and for the past few months I've been having trouble breathing. I lose my breath from very little physical activity and often just from talking. I would be mid sentence and have to stop to breathe.

I kept reading that some pregnant women struggle with shortness of breath. But I understand that this is something that happens in the 3rd trimester when your bump gets bigger and presses on everything. But did anyone experience this in the first trimester or when their bump was still tiny?

Honestly, there is a big chance that this has nothing to do with pregnancy, but I'm still curious

I definitely felt that throughout my pregnancy. I remember being 5 weeks pregnant and going for a walk. I’m a fast walker and don’t usually get puffed from it but I was waddling around as if I was 90, feeling like it was my top speed and panting like crazy. I believe it’s something to do with blood volume. It did ease in the second trimester for me and returned to first trimester levels late in pregnancy. I hope it’s equally benign for you.

Being very low in iron can cause shortness of breath so have you had that tested?

Yes, I just did my bloods yesterday and everything is great.

Good to hear it happened to someone else. I do feel 90 as well! But unfortunately for me it has not eased at all.

Not Escapin Xmas

That was the first sign that I was pregnant. Went to the gym like normal, got on the treadmill and had to stop after 10 minutes.

It didn’t resolve until after I had DD.

I had this in my first trimester but that was because I was taking progesterone and it can cause shortness of breath. I assume you're not taking that?

At 17 weeks your growing uterus is already pushing your abdominal organs up on your diaphragm which leaves a little less room for your lungs to expand to the extent they would be used to. We usually adjust easily and it is not going to harm us or the baby. There is also an increased blood volume which can also throw us a couple of different sensations. As PP said low iron and anaemia can do it but as your results are normal then I would guess it is just one of those pregnancy changes to our bodies that we notice.

Of course it is always best to refer these symptoms to your caregiver to eliminate anything else going on and if you become breathless without exertion you must go to ED.

Good luck with your upcoming appointment.
