Period underwear. Update post 35.

DD1 has modibodi, thinx and LoveLuna. She wears the LoveLuna most of the time anyway, good for "just in case". She swaps over to ModiBodi for the first day or two of her period when its very heavy, wears Modibody and thinx for the rest of her period. I asked her what she would want me to buy next time (although she is right for now with period pants) and she reckons loveluna for most of the time with a few modibodi for the heavier days

The thing I really don't like is you can't tell when they're full until they leak.

True. But I have a pretty good idea of how heavy I am bleeding. I treated period pants similar to a using tampon - when I am bleeding heavily, I change more frequently. When the bleeding eases off, I wear the pants a bit longer.

DD1 has learnt to take a spare paid of period undies to school with her and she changes in the middle of the day on her heaviest days (snap lock bag to bring home the used undies). She's figured out the leaking thing as well (eek!), and now has a better idea of when to change.

Those who have ModiBodi ... how accurate is the sizing? Do they run true to size, or small? I was looking at getting the swimmer bottoms for myself - I'm normally sz16 for undies / swimmer bottoms, but when I did my measurements it said size 20. I don't care about the number, but I also want the correct fit!

Rilees_Mama: Do you have a Big W nearby? They stock ModiBodi so you could check there. They're on hangers in the underwear section. Same for ModiBodi Red, Love Luna and Bonds Bloody Comfy.

I use modibodi I can’t recommend them enough. I bleed more than any woman I know and these mostly contain it.

I used to use 2 maternity pads at a time at night, and I would need to change the sheets most of the time. The modi bodi contain it well, with only one time I needed to change the sheets.

I only use the heavy flow ones, because that’s my normal. I take 14 tablets a day to stop bleeding and I’m still bleeding heavily. So trust me, if they work for me, they will work for anyone.

When I had a major problem my friend mentioned she used incontinence pads, they were great but bulky but I am back to normal ones now, I may look into period underwear though

Update time. My DD got her first period a week ago. She coped surprisingly well. Me? Not so much! It was like toilet training but without being able to get the other parent to do half of it.

It was a heavy first period with lots of pain. She had bad pain for about 3 or 4 days and lots of extra bowel activity on those days. We'll be seeing a doctor before her next one is due to work out what she can take for that. Paracetamol helped but she might need something more like Naprogesic or Ponstan. She's too young for a pharmacist to sell it over the counter to us. Have to be 14 yo for Ponstan. DD is 11yo.

In a helpful twist DD was home from school for the whole week due to lockdown in Brisbane so I was able to help her with pad changes etc. I would have had to keep her home for at least two days because there's no way she could have managed the heaviest, most painful days at school.

My verdict on the various products. Libra Girl day pads and overnight pads were useless for a full on, heavy period that had no manners. I've never liked ultrathin pads. They confirmed it. They're okay now right at the end for spotting, kind of like an overgrown and more protective panty liner. I switched her over to my trusty and reliable U by Kotex Extra (thick) day pads and overnight pads with wings. That did the trick. Used mostly the overnight pads because she kept having leaks at the back because of the way she prefers to sit.

The Bonds BCU I bought her were too small. She grew since I bought them. They weren't a style she liked anyway. Too low rise.

Tried the Love Luna pants. Useless on the heavy days. Leaked within an hour or so. They're okay now that she's up to spotting days.

Love love love the TOM Organic midi briefs from Coles. I bought one pair to see if DD would like them and if they would work for her. I was having to wash them out and dry them overnight each night. She loved them and they worked for the moderate-heavy days. Particularly loved the waterproof protection all the way to the back waistband. I'm going to buy some more online from TOM. The pants in Coles are regular absorbency and the almost identical ones on TOM's website are super absorbency.

I'm planning to buy some ModiBodi boyshorts for the heavy days. They have protection all the way to the back waistband. Hopefully a pair of those with a pad to start the day will be enough for DD to get through a school day, by being able to dispose of the pad partway through the day and use the pants for the rest of the school day. She still can't manage a pad change on her own. Almost but not quite.

So that's our experience so far with period pants.

Anyone got a nice discount code for ModiBodi?

Just wanted to add that I was surprised at the sizing. DD is about a 12 in older girls. Based on her hip measurements she should have been a size XS (size 8 ) in TOM but they only stock S-XL at Coles so I got an S. They fit perfectly. Not big at all on DD. That's a women's size 10. In Love Luna she's a size 6-8 women's. Bonds were a size 6 women's and too tight and small. I guess that makes her a size 8 women's, and sizing up as recommended by the period pants companies makes her a size 10.

I find the thin pads useless for heavy periods. The Libra Goodnights with wings come on special often and they work well for heavy flow.

Yeah Love Luna are useless for heavy flow. I found they leaked easily and there was no warning it was going to happen.

Two teenage daughters here and eldest has tried - and now loves - Modibodil.  I got her the full brief style, women's size 12 (I think).  Youngest DD not quite sure what she wants to do, so have armed her with Libra girls pads and liners.

From asking eldest DD (age 16) one of the things she loves about period undies is they are so easy to use and she doesn't have to muck about with changing pads during the school day (when they used to go to school). So, clean pair on in the morning, have 2 clean pairs in her school bag along with a couple of ziplock bags she can put the dirty ones in - and when she's home, dirty ones go straight into the wash.  I wish something like that existed when I first got my period.

I was in Woolies last night buying pads, liners and tampons for Share the Dignity and noticed Kotex Thinx - Thinx have apparently partnered with Kotex.

Not sure if they are as good but there regular price is $20 for regular bikini, Thinx are mid $30 range.

I like my Bonds and TOM pairs but my Thinx are the best pair - I use them on the heaviest days.

No, but I believe if you buy a 7 pack it works out to be a reasonable discount. We have it worked into our ndis funding if that’s an option?

OP, you probably already did this, but a heat pack will help while you work out what pain killers are ok to use

I found the thinx period undies from Coles were good but I use them on light days only

DD first got her period at 9 and the GP told me to put her on Naprogesic. It didn't work anyhow. I found Advil is best for her. But she went to a paediatric gynae and was put on transexamic (sp?) acid. Suspected endometriosis - I have it and her periods are extremely heavy and painful.

And Love Luna don't work for DD either. They're far too thin. Her modi bodi are the best for her. I bought her a 7 pack once we realised they were good.

Unfortunately Big W doesn't have the style I want for DD.

I saw the Kotex Thinx pants at Chemist Warehouse and Woolworths. They don't say how high at the back the protection is, which is annoying. I did consider them but the high protection at the back is essential for DD. Easier that than trying to get her to sit differently in a way she finds uncomfortable.

No NDIS. They rejected DD's application a few years ago and I just haven't gotten around to trying to reapply.

Modibodi is being sold at Big W. Hope for a sale? At least you don't have to pay postage.

They don't have the boyshort style I want for DD otherwise I'd be watching the catalogues for a sale there.

There were many hot water bottles made and applied to her abdomen. I know that a hot water bottle has always helped me when I have cramps.

The pharmacist mentioned Advil. It's just ibuprofen isn't it? Can't get DD to swallow a tablet yet. We've tried. I'll take DD to a gynaecologist who specialises in girls and young women with special needs if I need to and look at getting her on the Pill or a Mirena fitted if necessary. Heavy painful periods are shit and I'm not going to leave her to suffer. Screw that. I have a Mirena to deal with my heavy periods, and previously I used the Pill for about 20 years to manage them. I think DH might be a bit hesitant but he's not the one helping her deal with the physical realities of periods and blood, and he's never had a period, so he only gets a limited say. Periods suck.

Jerry: That's who I'll be taking DD to if I need to! I've made sure I have her name saved. We see DD's dev. paediatrician this week so I'll see what she suggests for pain management.

I've bought boyleg Modi Bodi's at Big W for DD.

Yep Advil is ibuprofen. DD has a huge issue with swallowing tablets and puts on a huge performance, but she can swallow the Advil gel capsules easily.

DD finally did get the Pill this year. They were hesitant (so was I) due to her age, but we gave it a try. She had the mini Pill for a bit, but then went to the normal one.

It hasn't done anything for pain. It never did for me either. Her options are Implanon (which I DO NOT want her on) or Mirena. Mirena works for me, but I know it's hard to get in small girls. Especially those who haven't had kids. DD is really tiny - 153cm and only a touch over 40kg.

@PaddlepopIm really surprised that your DD was knocked back by NDIS. It would definitely be worth reapplying. Are you currently seeing therapists that could provide supporting documentation for your application?
