Everything :)

I always try and be in Hobart on a Saturday for Salamanca Market - I know it isn't as good as it used be but I still love it.

It is the sort of place that wherever you go is lovely and all those little unknown bushwalks which are great with kids are just as magnificent as major walks.

We will be there from 21st dec to 9th January. Travelling around as much as possible.

Current vague plan

Devonport three nights

Sheffield over Christmas

Zeehan

Power station trail

Hobart for New Years

Southport then Swansea then St. Helens for 2/3 nights each

Launceston for three days to finish.

The Tarkine Drive.

I don't remember anything surprising at Zeehan, but certainly at Strahan there was, although the West Coast Heritage Centre at Strahan deserved more of our time than it got. Slightly old-fashioned compared with many modern centres but still amazing history there.

Devonport three nights - Reliquaire https://www.reliquaire.com/

Sheffield over Christmas - Tazmazia, we love this place https://www.tasmazia.com.au/

Zeehan - The museum http://wchczeehan.com.au/, walk the spray tunnel https://www.discovertasmania.com.au/home/local-tips/spray-tunnel-in-zeehan. Head to Strahan and visit ocean beach (one of my favourite places on earth), do one of the cruises - I recommend the red boat, its owned by locals and they employ locals https://worldheritagecruises.com.au/. You could do the West Coast Wilderness Railway if you have time https://www.wcwr.com.au/.

Power station trail - stop in at the Wall when you head this way, its amazing https://www.thewalltasmania.com.au/.

Hobart for New Years - I will come back for this... Maybe Port Arthur if you dont mind the drive https://portarthur.org.au/ plus lots of interesting things to check out that way.

Southport then Swansea then St. Helens for 2/3 nights each - Beaches - beautiful. The Elephant Pass pankcake parlour is one of our favourites http://www.mountelephantpancakes.com.au/.

Launceston - The gorge https://www.launcestoncataractgorge.com.au/, Grindewald is fun https://www.tamarvalleyresort.com.au/. Head out to Beaconsfield Museum https://www.beaconsfieldheritage.com.au/, visit the monkeys in City park.

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

When in the northwest coast, go to Latrobe. Reliquewear has already been mentioned and is well worth a look. It is in Latrobe. Anvers chocolates and cafe is also worth going to in Latrobe and you can see them making chocolate out the back. The bluff in Devonport nearby has a great kid’s playground and there is a nice short walk to the lighthouse. If you drive along the coast to Stanley it is a lovely coastal drive. The town of Penguin is cute, with penguins everywhere. Boat Harbour is lovely. As is Hellyer Beach which is stunning and usually deserted. The nut at Stanley and chairlift is good. Also in Sheffield there is a place that makes marbles. It has a little museum of gadgets that my 11yo loves and could spend hours in.

On the West Coast I have only done Strahan. Go to the Henty Dunes and slide down. So much fun! And there is a long running play there too - called something like the ship that never sailed.

In Hobart, Port Arthur and MONA are always good. I like the Huon Valley - lots of orchards and some wineries. Cockle creek feels like another world and some gorgeous beaches down far south. Wineglass Bay on the East Coast is a nice walk too.

We really loved the Port Arthur settlement, there is also an old convict coal mine down that way at Lime Bay. It's free, and it's fascinating, there's the remains of an old jail and other buildings that the convicts lived in while mining the coal.

We also loved Bicheno and that whole area, so lovely for walks and photos.

But really, the whole island is beautiful and you're never far from somewhere really interesting and historical.

Everywhere!

Bay of fires are incredible, Bicheno and the penguins, cradle mountain, The Nut at Stanley, glow worms at Russell Falls, port Arthur and Hobart area, Bruny and Maria islands. I’ve not been to the Huon area but keep hearing how amazing it is.

Speaking of the Huon, the Tahune airwalk is open again, after suffering serious bushfire damage in Jan/Feb 2019.

The family we stay with have a little farm down that way, and everything was covered with ash, and there was so much smoke all of the time - made the eyes sting.

The airwalk was definitely on our list, but we'll make it yet! The Huon certainly needs the tourist money after the fires as they happened during their peak season.

If I can jump in here, does anyone know of any historical places (I mean in the actual buildings) that you can stay? I was thinking cottages rather than hotel or manor rooms.

Kids and I love history and it would be cool to do this with them.

JF thank you so much, I think my kids would love brickendon particularly.

My kids adored Brickendon, we spent many visits there. Not staying there, because we lived nearby, but birthday parties and picnics. It's lovely.

Woolmers Estate is nearby too. Both properties were owned by the same family originally. They lived at Woolmers until the last descendant died in the early 90s.

I find Woolmers fascinating. The estate has furniture, cars and so on from the 180os right through until the 90s. They just lived in the house with furniture that is from when the house was originally built, never really upgraded much of the original house.

If you can, check out a little town about an hour from Launceston. It's called a gorgeous little seaside town called Penguin and it's penguin themed. They have a fantastic bakery, too. We loved it there! We were planning on going back to TAS sometime this year but due to borders being closed and now having a newborn, it has not happened, so enjoy!

Any recommendations for accommodation in or near Hobart, preferably near the beach please?

Hobart is not really beachy. Will you have a car? Public transport tends to be a bit crappy.

Closest beach would be Sandy Bay, or Bellerieve on the other side of the river,
