Bob
I will say upfront, I am seeking medical help, but due to Christmas and New Year, it’s a couple of weeks away, so I thought I’d ask...Does anyone have any experience with a thick uterine lining? I went to my GP after months of heavy and irregular periods and she did some bloodwork and sent me for an ultrasound. It showed a polyp and some ovarian cysts and a uterine lining of 21mm.Just before Christmas, I ended up in ED because the bleeding was so heavy for so long. They called my gyno, who prescribed tablets to stop the bleeding, and I will see him in January. I’m just wondering what to expect. Will he need to internally examine me then (I’d like to be prepared). My GP suggested that he might do a D&C (I’d love that at this stage, to get rid of it all). Does anyone have any experience that they’d be happy to share? So that I’m not drip feeding info...I’m in my 40’s and the blood tests show that I’m not menopausal. Redchick
Hi, I don’t think I have a thick uterine lining but I have had heavy periods since my boys were born. A few months ago I had a Mirena IUD inserted by my gyno and it has been amazing! Some spotting when I get my period but nothing else. My understanding of a D&C is that it would scrape away the current lining of your uterus but would not be a long term fix (I’ve had a polyp previously). I think endometrial ablation is the one that permanently changes the lining. Experiences are mixed with the mirena so have a chat to your dr and friends/forums to hear what it has been like it for others. My gyno also prescribed tablets to reduce the bleeding (I was supposed to take them only when I had my period) but I never got to try them as I got the mirena. Hope you get a solution soon that is right for you
caitiri
My last ultrasound showed similar. I've tried mirena which was terrible but most likely because of the shape of my uterus. Gynaecologist said ablation probably wouldn't be permanent at my age but in 40s would be an option.Transxemic (sp?) Acid works for a lot of people which u take during period.I've found a pill that stops periods but I don't love being on it. It's Zoely
tinselfoil hat
I hope you can get some answers Bob. I am following this thread as I have similar problems. I’ve had numerous ultrasounds which have shown a thick uterine lining. An incidental funding of a large ovarian cyst which has since burst. A ‘bulky uterus’, whatever that is. I had a mirena which helped significantly with volume but I still bled for at least two weeks of the month. Had it taken out to TTC and am pregnant atm. While I was TTC I had one non mirena period (what a blessing to conceive so quickly, I could only have my mirena out because I was working from home, if I wasn’t pregnant when I was asked to return to the workplace we would have had to stop TTC as I couldn’t manage the 45min pad/tampon changes at work). My iron went through the floor during that period, I couldn’t leave the house it was so awful. The public system has been worse than useless in sorting this out. Multiple invasive ultrasounds only to tell me I was fine. I’m not fine. I’ve now got health insurance as my GP has said surgery is probably required and will sort this out after baby’s birth. My GP has said some gynocologists will give you two mirenas which can help. Otherwise an ablation might help, failing that a hysterectomy. The pill doesn’t work for me as I bleed through the strongest types. It truly is awful and isolating I hope you get answers quickly.
Karma Sutra
If you need to be prepared for an internal exam would it be better if you changed to a female gyno? Due to various reasons I won’t let any male doctor, specialist or otherwise near me especially when it comes to those type of issues. Bob
Thanks so much for all of the replies. Holidayromp - he was my OB when I had my twins, so he’s already seen everything there is to see. He has a lovely, kind bedside manner, so I am very comfortable with him. Well, I’d actually rather no-one does an internal, of course, but if it has to happen, I don’t object to him. But thanks for thinking of that. It’s so interesting that some of you are prescribed a pill when you have your period. Why did I not know about this!! I guess I do now. Tinselfoil hat - I’m sorry you’ve experienced something similar. It’s truly debilitating, isn’t it. The last ‘period’ I had lasted for 28 days. Some of those days I had light bleeding, but the others was heavy bleeding or what I describe as ‘just had a baby’ bleeding. The last two times I went shopping I had to end the trip early because I knew it was everywhere. I only wear black pants now. And I am low in iron too, so I’m taking supplements for that. They have spoken about a transfusion but the GP wasn’t keen because I was going to lose it from bleeding anyway. I’m surprised that they didn’t even do a D&C for you. Maybe that’s not always the done thing. I have my fingers crossed that things are better after your baby is delivered. But if it isn’t, please don’t take no for an answer. Mine has slowly been getting worse since I had a baby 3 years ago.And thanks for explaining the difference between a D&C and an ablation. I didn’t realise they were different. I don’t want more children, so I’d say my options are more open than someone who hasn’t completed their family. I’d rather not have a hysterectomy if I don’t need one, but I will have one if there’s no other option. I’ll update after my appointment. Jenflea
The polyp is probably bleeding which adds to the heavy period and extra bleeding. I've had 3 in my uterus(when I was 30) and one this year on my cervix(plus I think it might be back, sigh). They're easily removed (in my experience anyway). The uterine ones were done under twilight sedation in the day unit of my local private hospital (private ob/gyno) and the one on my cervix was done in her rooms, similar to a pap smear. Ron Swanson
I had polyps and adenomyosis, diagnosed via ultrasound, as I had heavy bleeding that lasted for 10 days or so, and came every 3 weeks, plus a lot of clots.Treatment was a D&C to reduce the lining, remove the polyps and mirena inserted at the same time, via the public hospital system, under twilight sedation (and waiting period wasn't that long).Five years later I had my mirena replaced again via public hospital system and just before they wheeled me in, they asked me to sign a consent form for another D&C - I hadn't had an ultrasound 2nd time round, and I am not sure why they thought I might need one, but was happy to consent. The first time I had the mirena inserted, it took about 6 months to settle down - there was light bleeding for the first 2 or 3 months, then spotting every now and then, when I was stressed. I never get my period these days, it's pure bliss!
Guest BusbyWilkes
IME the polyp will almost definitely be contributing to the length of your “period” but won’t be related to the thickness of your lining. I had a 31 day “period” which was the last straw and had me finally seeking treatment. Not everyone has the same results with an ablation (or any treatment options) but I have not had a period or spotting since mine, which is life changing. Bob
I started bleeding again yesterday, so I called him and he sent through a repeat script for the tablets. It seems that if I’m not on the tablets, I’m going to continue to have one giant, long period. I just hope he agrees to a procedure and it can happen soon. Fingers crossed, I have the results that some of you had. I would settle for normal periods, but if I can have little to no bleeding, even better. Mumrocks
If you keep bleeding you could go back to the hospital. I once bled through super tampon and pad every half an hour for 4 days and the tablets they gave (primulot?) weren’t stopping it at all so a gp sent me to an emergency appointment with a gyno and he said I needed to go to emergency ASAP. My blood pressure was undetectable basically so they did an emergency d&c and inserted a mirena within hours
Bob
Mumrocks- that sounds awful. I’m glad you got it sorted. Mine isn’t a medical emergency any more, as the primulot is doing it’s job. I had run out and the instructions said to stop after two days of no bleeding, but I can’t do that, or it will start again. I assume I’ll be on them until he can do a D&C or similar. I guess it’s a positive that the medication is working.

You do how ever much dosage and then lower it a tiny bit for a week and then keep lowering until you can’t half any more. I took it for easily a month after my d&c
Bob
Well, I’m incredibly frustrated. I had a D&C and a mirena insertion a week ago. I was told that I would probably have light bleeding for a week from the D&C and possibly 6 weeks of light bleeding from the mirena. I had light bleeding from Monday to Wednesday, so that was ok. It increased on Thursday and since the weekend, I’ve been bleeding heavily. How is that possible? I thought he removed everything?!?

It definitely doesn't reduce bleeding for everyone. I'm sorry though; that really sucks.
Mumrocks
The mirena might have dislodged? Might need an ultrasound to check

Suzyr
Hi, I am 56 and post menopausal. I had bleeding last year and got it checked out. Turned out I had a polyp and thickened uterine line. Had polyp removed and had a D&C. All good now.
