Givingitanothergo
So happy to find this thread.. I’m 42 but it started two years ago. The intense night sweats, the hot flashes, the short but ridiculously heavy periods. Then the light and short periods. Regular cycle then suddenly 21 days and now it’s near 40 days and nothing. I can’t put up with this for the next 10+ years

I am still using the mirena to mitigate the hot flushes now that I am full blown menopausal. I suspect that it is playing a role in keeping my emotions nicely regulated.. purpleduck
I'm going to joint this thread too - early 40s, high thyroid antibodies (but function is still fine), have started to have some issues with sleep in the last few months. Can I ask - what is flooding? I have very heavy periods for the first 2-3 days then it gets more normal (usually 7 days all up). The most frequent I'd be changing my pad would be about 1.5-2hrs at the heaviest. Does that count as flooding? What kind of things do they look for in blood tests for perimenopause? I thought there would be too much variation in hormone levels to get a distinct result? rewritethestars
Flooding is literally having gushes/floods/ such heavy bleeding that it soaks through clothing. It’s not fun at all. I’m facing early menopause due to having ovaries removed. I have the beginnings of peri already but once ovaries go it will be instant full blown menopause. Has anyone else had this? charli73
Joining this thread too... am in the. Idle of perimenopause according to my GP.. I am 46 and have been having hot flushes and A period once a year since I was about 42.... period lasts a half day and is hardly any bleeding at all.I’ve been taking herbal supplements and on soy milk to help symptoms and have been gaining weight ( could be COVID wine intake too) but very emotional and foggy mentally also.Recent blood tests indicate I still have testosterone and oestrogen so not completely menopauseyet.... WaitForMe
I suspect I'm at the very, very early stages. Cycle has gone from a perfect 28 days since I was a teen, to now being between 22-26. Still within the normal range of regular I think, but given how clockwork I was before, its a big change for me. Especially the shorter cycle. Also gotten heavier. I'd never experienced a leak before but now its to the point where I just can't rely on pads. And since a vaginal birth tampons aren't great either. I've started using a cup and no leaks since then.I'm more emotional too now. I think I should start tracking it, I suspect it will line up with my cycle. Then at least I can tell myself todays not a good day to be making big decisions lol!
Guest
So glad to find this thread!I’m 49 and have suspected for a few years that I am peri menopausal even though blood tests said otherwise. I never really got hot flushes but couldn’t tolerate the heat as much as I used to. I would be fanning myself while people looked at me weirdly because they didn’t think it was hot. I would get night sweats and my anxiety disorder flared up again. Waking through the night and forgetfulness (yesterday I spent ages looking for my necklace that I thought I took off while I ironed my shirt only to find out I was wearing it the whole time under my shirt ). My periods were still relatively regular although I had the odd longer cycle here and there. Last month my cycle was 38 days and then out of the blue yesterday my period turned up again after only 16 days and today is really heavy Hoping this means I’m almost at the end of peri! purpleduck
Question re: hormone blood tests with a peri-menopause query from the Dr - does it matter what time of the month you get the test done? Google suggests it isn't actually a worthwhile test, but I don't trust everything I read.
Nighthawk
Any time I had the test it didn’t pick up anything unusual hormone-wise. It’s obvious I’m peri-menopausal by other symptoms though.
YodaTheWrinkledOne
I am signing into this thread too. fairly sure I am perimenopausal. It sucks.I have appt to see Dr in a couple of weeks. This will be the main issue I want to discuss.

I never thought about it till now but my GP's and my endocrinologist specialist just sent me off with the referral and I knew to have it done a bit before the next appointments but don't remember them mentioning timingsI have the results on my email but I just remember the doctors going through one by one and them saying 'looks like you are not in menopause' or 'you are out of the preimenopausal stage' type thing

Wish I'd asked her before I'd taken the last test.
LaFoom
Another blood test fine but stacks of symptoms person here. My GP showed me the check-list and I cried inside. More of a what didn't I have than what did I have. So I take the blood test is can confirm that you are in perimenopause, but it doesn't rule out the you are not. GP tried the pill and when that didn't do enough became Mirena and Oestrogen patches. That helps a lot but I still get flushes ans wake up bathed in sweat sometimes. One of the few issues I didn't have was heavy bleeding.
WaitForMe
I thought I might be but its all pretty much settled down now. A bit weird really. If what I experienced is anything to go by, really not looking forward to the real thing!
Seayork2002
I feel like I have permanent period symptoms now and a light permanent hot flush, it came and went before now it is always here but not as bad.I have less energy than before, mind you I have never had too much lol!so I may go back and see my GP for more blood tests if this keeps up

Karma Sutra
I am 47 and still have regular 28 day cycles. Have ovulation pain and the changes in Cervical fluid during my fertile and non fertile days.Unfortunately long fertility is on both sides of my family so I can look forward for periods for years to come.Luckily DH recently had the snip so once he is clear at least we don’t have to worry about an unwanted pregnancy. Seayork2002
It is interesting to see in this thread there is no mention of Hormone Replacement Therapy. I really can't speak for anyone else but as long as I can manage my symptoms myself I won't be having it, unless my doctor strongly says I need it for whatever reasonMy mum never had it and I am not presuming we will go through the same thing I don't feel the need
Basil
Can I ask - what is flooding? I have very heavy periods for the first 2-3 days then it gets more normal (usually 7 days all up). The most frequent I'd be changing my pad would be about 1.5-2hrs at the heaviest. Does that count as flooding?I don’t know the technical definition but my Dr did mention something about if it got heavier than 90mL per period, I should bring it up. I said that I was having cycles where I would have more than 90mL per day! I use a cup so can tell reasonably accurately. On my bad days, I will soak through a tampon/cup plus pad and my pants and sometimes blood gets on the chair too. I end up just staying on the toilet because it’s too messy otherwise. If I have to go out on those days, I try to be home within 2-3hrs or else it gets embarrassing. Mostly, I try to schedule things so I can be home. It is really inconvenient but then it goes away for a few months. Sigh.

s_mdn v2.0
It is interesting to see in this thread there is no mention of Hormone Replacement Therapy. Mirena is often offered to those in perimeno as a form of HRT.I've been using HRT for around 6 months - oestrogen gel and progesterone capsules- and it has been a lifesaver. Took a few mths to get it settled, but some peri symptoms stopped within 2-3 days of starting it. There's some health benefits to HRT as well as symptom relief, so I'm happy to use it. Totally rec'd people look into it actually. Hindsight and symptoms say I've probably been perimenopausal for anywhere between 3 - 5 years. Hard to really know though because of other conditions. Oh well, I'm glad I turned 40 as it seemed to be the magic age where Dr's took me slightly more seriously.

Dusty
I’ve just started HRT, started peri mid 40’s then no period from 47, I’m 52My change of life was a non-event, bit of a hot flush here and there in the middle of the night but that was only when I didn’t take my remmifem vitamins.Following a bone density scan 3 weeks ago I discovered I’m osteoporotic, so I’m on HRT and I still don’t know how I feel about that.Yesterday I had twinges in my lower groin like I was ovulating... is that normal?
