QLD COVID-19 support thread

Press conference this morning said that there are a further 4 confirmed cases of the UK strain, on the same floor, in the same hotel. Police have reviewed CCTV footage to try and establish points of contact and can’t identify anything conclusive. It seems everyone was following correct procedures.

They are now theorising that the air conditioning system and/or toilets may have something to do with this outbreak.

All quarantine guests of that hotel are now being moved to a different hotel and will have to undertake a further 14 days of quarantine. That is really sucky for them. Nearly a whole month of quarantine! I hope they are moved to a spacious alternative because i can imagine they would be going stir crazy.

Yes, would be awful to be put into an additional 14 days quarantine. But fully understandable why it is needed. At least most rooms at the Grand Chancellor had balconies, most Brisbane hotels don't.

It's good to see most people wearing masks at the shops. Only saw three people without masks today when I went for groceries.

In my personal news, Dad is in hospice now, who will allow contactless visits for us Brisbane people, as long as we have evidence of negative covid test.

As I have no symptoms or contact, it appears I need a GP referral to get a COVID clearance test.

So in the rules of the mask, if anyone visits greater Brisbane between now & the 22nd of jan do we then have to continue to abide by the mask wearing when we get back home or not?

I can’t find a conclusive answer.

Thanks! I can’t believe I missed that one.

DS has a specialist appointment in Brisbane on Friday, I knew I would have to wear a mask during the appointment, but wasn’t sure if I would then need to wear a mask afterwards once I got back home.

As a Victorian who has just returned home from seeing family in regional QLD, I've just watched the QLD press conference and I'm so impressed with how well QLD has done with this latest outbreak. Also impressed with the four strong intelligent women (AP, Prof Young, police etc) leading the press conference. Well done Queenslanders 🙂

Yeah I’m really proud of our leadership here. I’m sure that there are things this gov isn’t doing so well, but management of this situation is not one of those. AP has listened to the advice of JY and is erring on the side of science. And as a result, we seem to be having episodes of short term annoying lockdowns/restrictions etc, which have presumably played a huge role in not having a long term issue with containment, avoiding longer lockdown periods. At least, I like to think it’s good management rather than good luck. I think if it were merely luck, either the Ipswich cluster last year or this one would have taken off. I think good management is a huge factor in our success thus far.

Obviously, there’s other factors like the fact that we get less repatriation than NSW and VIC but the UK strain had the potential to be a real drama. I’m really proud of how this group of leaders have handled it. Especially impressed by Yvette D’ath and her addresses- she is clear, concise and direct.

I’m also proud of the level of compliance in the community. I’ve only seen the odd person here and there not mask wearing in my community, and I choose to believe that they must have one of the valid exemption reasons. It’s literally only a handful not wearing masks here and there. Social distancing seems to be more widely practiced and accepted too.

I am feeling more optimistic this week about being on top of this latest threat.

On top of that, we are EXTREMELY lucky to have not had it really reach the regions, because while I would HOPE that compliance would follow I am not so sure of my fellow community members.

As I said on another thread, I picked someone up from the airport on Friday - there was a sign at the front of the airport to mask up so I did.

While waiting for the plane there was reasonably good mask wearing, but by the times that bags were eventually claimed it was dismal. (Admittedly the baggage claim section is fairly open)

One good thing is there are a few more masks walking around the supermarket ( very likely those who were in Greater Brisbane early January).

However I just hope that we are never tested. So yes, thank you AP, because sure as eggs if we had had DF in charge it would have been a whole different ball game.

Oh my goodness yes. And DF and GB both have the same “it’s all Anastasias fault” soundtrack... I can’t even imagine DF at the helm. Thank goodness we didn’t have to find out what that looked like.

I was prepared to be nicer to GB the other day, then she stared poo pooing the idea of qld moving hotel quarantine to mining camps - like, how is that even necessary for her to comment on? It just felt like another opportunity to be oppositional, which I guess is what opposing parties do, but is it really necessary when it’s not even her state in question?

For the record, I don’t hate the idea, but I’m also aware of the multitudes of issues that come with it, predominantly staffing, so I’m neither for it against it just yet... there needs to be a very solid plan for how they staff it and how the support those staffing it.

Greater Brisbane has reached the 14 day mark from 8 Jan (start of lockdown) with no new cases. Yay!

Restrictions are back to the December levels - masks no longer mandatory but recommended on public transport and anywhere where you can’t socially distance, restaurants back to the 2m2 rule, drinking standing up, dancing allowed, 50 people in a house etc.

Well done Brisbane!

  • 3 weeks later...

I knew it was down here somewhere buried beneath the folding.

Been thanking all entities that we are so relatively safe up here today.

Extremely thankful that we are so blessed to be so blithe as to not need masks to contemplate our day.

So relieved that the mindless cretins who insist on being in my personal space aren't carrying anything too dangerous.

And so very glad not to be facing gaol time for acting upon my desire to garrotte the half-dozen half-wits who came into the tiny store we had waited 10 minutes to enter (because there were people in there before us) - fuck sake, people...

From tonight, Brisbane is a green zone for Victoria.

From tonight - Brisbane Council region is an Orange Zone. :( (wanted crying emoji)

We have finally gotten all our "stuff" into gear and are moving to Country Vic like the plan has been for over a year.

We are due to drive into Vic 2 weeks tomorrow

Oh Pearson I hope this is just a few days blip for us all and you get to travel as planned. My mother is supposed to be having cancer surgery at the PA next week and I am praying it is not delayed.

It will hopefully all be over by then. As per pp, it's just test and isolate till the result's through, and they're very quick at the moment. They will just want to be waiting and seeing if there are any more cases.

Not that anything impeding your journey is to be dismissed as unimportant, of course.

Oh no, fingers crossed it is all under control and your plans can remain the same. Our friends were on a flight to Brisbane to visit family as the news broke (same suburb as the case too!) so hoping for them as well that orange is as bad as it gets.

Yes, can confirm DS had a test at 9am in Vic and results were through 6.30am the next day. Private path provider too, not health department. All the best.

If it stays oarange, I'll be fine, slightly stressed because moving, but fine... the question is where do I get test done? Albury Wodonga where I cross or somewhere else?

If it ceases altogether midnight 9 April I'll be better.

If it goes red, I have no idea what to do

Are you driving down in one day? You are supposed to isolate until you've got the test result, but obviously you might have to get petrol in order to get to a testing site.

Results will be quicker if you get it in Melbourne, depends where you are driving to though. I'm regional and it has taken a bit longer for results to come through, the tests need to be sent to Melbourne for processing.

I hope it all turns out well for you, Pearson. We are in a similar but less high stakes boat - DH is originally from Melbourne and had to celebrate his 50th last year away from his fam and friends (had to put up with mine instead haha - a very sedate 50th). He finally decided it was safe enough to go, and booked for him and the kids to fly down in the second week of school hols. I’m so excited for a week of just being able to get up, go to work, not pick up after three other people lol. I think I’ll be more devastated if they can’t go than they will be! Haha. But I’m hopeful with the very strong contact tracing and health measures Qld dont hesitate to implement, we should be ok.

Love to know where the missing link in the chain between the doc and the landscaper is though 🤔 makes me quite nervous about the fact that it must be in the community somewhere...

And back to masks full time at work again, my painful cystic acne is not enjoy the on again, off again nature of that. But it’s what needs to happen.

All minor stuff in the scheme of things! Got my fingers crossed that they can put a nice ring around it and isolate/contain. So far they’ve done a good job of it. Fortunately we are not technically in Brisbane or Moreton shire, so we are ok for the moment as far as travel zones to vic go. But watch this space, I suppose.
