School phone ban - how’s it going?

@Jerry I am glad to hear from a principal not going down the 1-1 iPad route in primary. I would be very supportive of that.

I should ask DD how much iPad time they have at the new school. At the old they did digital literacy once a week (coding and stuff), and did use them at other times, but I’m not sure how many the school had. There were plenty of parents who felt it was too much!

Answer - they use them once a week, for one lesson. This is for year 2.

my primary school is all phones go to office. We have laptop trollies for classes to borrow as well as Ipad caddies.

I did see a positive for Ipads last year on my 5/6 support class, they did talk to text and all their imaginations came out in their work - everything we've been teaching them but their disability stopped them putting pen to paper.

I'm in kinder support and thank my lucky stars we don't ever use those devices lol

My DD's old school had no phones at all. DD text me one day saying she was unsafe and was doing something that was harming her, she needed help and reached out to me. I contacted the school and asked them to do a welfare check on her. I admitted she text me. DD got in trouble for texting me and was told to seek them out first. FFS I was her safe person and I was super angry she got in trouble when she needed help. I told DD that if she was ever in that situation I would just come and pick her up and tell the school she had an appointment.... they had no fucking idea even though I tried to educate them in mental health issues.

DS' high school brought in a new mobile policy this year (NSW so not a compulsory ban) and allocated every kid a locker with a combination lock so that phones have to go in there at start of day and can only come out after school. I love it - I can still send a message about pick up arrangements etc and know he will see it at 3pm, but know that they now spend lunchtime playing handball rather than trying to sneak time on their phones. Previously I know the school had noticed issues with the kids not socialising as much and also using hotspots to get around the restrictions on the school WiFi.

Myself and almost every other Victorian teacher breathed a huge sigh of relief when Merlino banned mobiles in schools. The constant daily battle was over in class, and in breaks the kids play and talk. The best.
